Q1. What made you want to join the Nuneaton coaching team?
I was looking for a new challenge, and I saw the role advertised on the England Hockey site, and having brought opposition teams to Etone College in the past, I thought Nuneaton would be a club I would like to work with to develop them and myself.
Q2. What excites you most about Nuneaton HC?
Nuneaton has men's and ladies’ teams in good positions in the league with room for progression. The players have the enthusiasm and desire, which I can work with to help achieve their ambitions as teams and individuals.
Q3. What style of coaching do you try and bring to the game?
I enjoy working on gameplay. Understanding how to win games with the players available and design training sessions with Saturdays in mind. I enjoy progressing people, particularly juniors through to seniors. With adults, it is sometimes just small things to improve their game and confidence.
Q4. How are you hoping to support the development and expansion of the junior teams in the club?
I will deliver fun and engaging sessions for the juniors that hopefully the youngsters and parents will feedback to their social groups to encourage more people to come and have a go to see if hockey is the sport for them. I will look to bring the juniors through to the senior section at a point that is appropriate to them. I am also keen to engage with local schools when that can be arranged.
Q5. Tell us about your interests outside of hockey?
Outside of hockey, I am a big sports fan, particularly of F1, and have been to many of the races around the world, my next one being in Brazil. I am also keen on anything with an engine: cars, trains, planes, etc., and currently volunteer at the Great Central Railway. I've also been a volunteer at Barnardo's for over 20 years.
Q6. How do you see hockey growing in terms of a sport being played at schools and at a national level?
I think England Hockey has a very strong development program currently, and the FIH Pro League being shown on Channel 4 (catch it back on YouTube) is great exposure to the sport. It would be good to get more state schools playing hockey, as it is predominantly private schools currently.
Q7. Describe your perfect Sunday?
Junior coaching in the mornings and then down to the Wing Kings sports bar in Coventry with my two adult daughters and friends to watch the F1.
