It is with deep sadness that Nuneaton Hockey Club announces the passing of former player and club stalwart, Bill Harris Snr, who passed away peacefully on the 23rd July 2026, at the age of 82.

Bill was a cornerstone of our club across two defining eras, representing Nuneaton from 1960 to 1970 and returning from 1975 to 1986. In total, Bill dedicated 21 seasons to Nuneaton Hockey Club (alongside a five-year spell with Coventry & North Warwickshire HC).

A Multi-Talented Sportsman

Born into a well-known local sporting family—his father "Wash" Harris was a legendary figure at Nuneaton Rugby Club—Bill was a gifted multi-sport athlete. In addition to his two decades on the hockey pitch, he was an accomplished cricketer across Warwickshire and Leicestershire, turning out for Nuneaton, Coventry & North Warks, Hinckley, and Sterling Metals.

That passion for local sport carried directly into the next generation. His son, Bill Harris Jr., followed in his father's footsteps, representing Nuneaton Hockey Club for many years.

A Lasting Legacy

Known across the Midlands sporting scene for his warmth, quick wit, and competitive drive, Bill embodied everything that makes grassroots sport special. While today's squad may not have shared the pitch with him, our club stands on the strong foundations built by dedicated players of Bill’s era.

On behalf of the executive committee, players, and supporters at Nuneaton Hockey Club, we send our heartfelt condolences to his children Bill, Becky, Gemma, and Sophie, his grandchildren, and the wider Harris family.

A funeral service to celebrate Bill's life will take place on Friday 4th September 2026, 2pm at the Heart of England crematorium. Following the service, all are welcome to join the family at The Chestnuts, Old Hinckley Road, Nuneaton, CV100AB, for refreshments and to share further memories.
