Game 9 : Greenfriars 3 Whitefriars 1

Posted by Patrick Veasey on 15 May 2019

With the sun beating down on the Etone pitch, game 9 in the Centenary Challenge got underway. With all square in the series so far, both teams were looking to gain the advantage. It was the Greens who found the net first, with Aamir Lockhart-Clegg blasting the ball into the top corner. Undaunted, the White’s pushed for an equaliser but failed to beat the energetic Green’s keeper Matt Pearce.

The second half saw the Greens dominate and despite some excellent defensive play by youngster Leon Fray, Liam Spiller eventually found the net from a well worked short corner. The heat and the pressure started to tell on the younger White’s team allowing Lockhart-Clegg to bag his second goal. At 3 nil down, the Whites rallied and embarked on an attacking spree leading to a series of penalty corners. Young, Faaiz Vorajee found the net with a beautifully struck shot to reduce the deficit. The Whites bravely fought on giving Matt Pearce a real workout but it was destined to be a Green day. With 2 games still to go the Green’s may have won the battle, but the war is far from over.
